The State Conservatory of Thessaloniki was founded in 1914, following the decision of the then Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos, under the name of 'Conservatory of Thessaloniki' and under the artistic and managerial supervision of the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs. Its aim was the teaching of the European music along with the support and promotion of the Greek music. The regulation of operation of the S.C.T. was based on the following basic statutes: Legislative decrees 1445/42, 2010/42 and 2870/54, Parliamentary decree of 1957 published in the Official Journal of the Greek Government (229/11-11-1957), which define until this day the framework of the musical education in our country. In 1959, almost half a century after its foundation, a part of the Conservatory of Thessaloniki constituted the core of today’s State Orchestra of Thessaloniki. In 1987, with the initiative of the then Minister of Culture, Melina Merkouri, the Conservatory was transferred to the historical preservable building of the Ottoman Bank, which had been tailored according to its needs, where it is accommodated until today. It is in that place where the students’ musical preparation is strengthened in an environment where theory is combined with action and art is combined with science. The Conservatory’s concert hall 'Melina Merkouri' hosts several musical events with Greek and foreign artists as well as seminars and contests. The Conservatory, as a member of the Association of European Conservatories, fosters its contacts with other institutions abroad so that its students and teaching staff can be constantly kept up-to-date. Since 1987, it has been participating in the meetings of the Mediterranean Conservatories within the framework of which students have presented works of Greek composers in Marseille, Sevilla, Algiers, Alexandria of Egypt (1996), Marseille, Genova (1999) and Thessaloniki (1997). The State Conservatory of Thessaloniki is also a member of the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres. Moreover, the vast material of its library is at the disposal not only of the Conservatory’s students and teaching staff but also of all those who love music. With the Law 2557/97 and the Minister of Culture, Evangelos Venizelos, the Conservatory was renamed State Conservatory of Thessaloniki. The S.C.T. is the only state conservatory in Greece and the students’ attendance is free of charge.
