The State Orchestra of Thessaloniki originated in the ‘50s from the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki. However, the orchestral practice has been cultivated with special care at the State Conservatory during the last years. All the students of strings, wind and percussion, from the intermediate level of their studies, participate in orchestral ensembles with continuous activity during the entire year.
Their repertoire is wide; varying from Vivaldi’s concertos to parts from Mahler‘s symphonies and pieces of the 20th century.
Opportunities for co-operations are frequent, especially with singers and choirs, leading to the performance of demanding plays such as Mozart’s Requiem. The Orchestra has participated in numerous opera productions and has accompanied soloists of high reputation. It has also performed in many cities in Greece and abroad.
Every year it organises a contest in order to select, as soloists, students of the Conservatory to perform in the final concerts of each year.
During the last years, Alkis Baltas, Karolos Trikolidis, Kostas Patsalidis, George Thymis, Dimitris Dimopoulos and Vladimiros Simeonidis have conducted the Orchestra of the Conservatory.
In November 2007, Kostis Papazoglou undertook the Orchestra with the aim to use intensively its potential and to actively promote the Conservatory’s culture.
